Abbreviations for all 4 patterns

K = Knit

P= Purl

K2 tog = Knit 2 stiches together

P2 tog = Purl 2 stitches together

C3 F = Place 3 stitches onto a cable needle hold them at the front your

Knitting, Knit 3 and then knit the 3 stiches from the cable needle

C3B = Place 3 stitches onto a cable needle hold them at the back your knitting, Knit 3 and then knit the 3 stitches from the cable needle

Pattern 1: Plain stocking stitch - Suitable for basic knitting skills, cast on, knit and purl

Materials:

  • Chunky yarn (approximately 100 grams)
  • 6.5 mm (US 10.5) knitting needles
  • Set of 6.5 mm (US 10.5) double-pointed needles (optional)
  • Yarn needle
  • Stitch marker
  • Cable needle for pattern 3
  • Bobble maker (or a small piece of cardboard)
  • Gauge: 12 stitches and 16 rows = 4 inches, 10 cms in stocking stitch (one row knit, one row purl)

 

Size:

One size fits most adults

Instructions:

Cast on 64 stitches using your favourite method.

Place a stitch marker to indicate the beginning of the round and join in the round, being careful not to twist the stitches, (if you prefer, to help prevent twisting, you can work a few rows backwards and forwards an then join into a round, the gap in the seam will then be sewn up with mattress stitch when your hat is finished)

Work in a k2, p2 ribbing pattern for 5 cms (2 inches). Until work measures 2 inches from the cast on edge to just under your needle

Switch to stocking stitch (knit all stitches) in the round, and continue until the hat measures approximately 18 cms (7 inches) from the cast-on edge.

Decrease rounds:

  • Round 1: K6, k2tog (56 stitches remain)
  • Round 2 and all even rounds: Knit all stitches.
  • Round 3: K5, k2tog (48 stitches remain)
  • Round 5: K4, k2tog (40 stitches remain)
  • Round 7: K3, k2tog (32 stitches remain)
  • Round 9: K2, k2tog (24 stitches remain)
  • Round 11: K1, k2tog (16 stitches remain)
  • Round 13: K2tog (8 stitches remain)

Cut the yarn, leaving a long tail. Thread the tail through the remaining stitches and pull tight to close the top of the hat.

Using a yarn needle, weave in any loose ends.

Optional: Attach a pom-pom or a handmade bobble to the top of the hat using a yarn needle.

Materials and information as for pattern 1

Instructions:

Cast on 64 stitches using your favourite method.

Rib pattern:

Every round the same *Knit 4 purl 4 from * to the of the round. Make sure that you have a beginning of round (BOR) marker in place and finish as the end of a round before starting decreases.

Decrease rounds:

  • Round 1: K4, P2 P2tog (56 stitches remain)
  • Round 2 and all even rounds: Knit all stitches.
  • Round 3: K4, p1 p2tog (48 stitches remain)
  • Round 5: K4, p2tog (40 stitches remain)
  • Round 7: K3, k2tog (32 stitches remain)
  • Round 9: K2, k2tog (24 stitches remain)
  • Round 11: K1, k2tog (16 stitches remain)
  • Round 13: K2tog (8 stitches remain)

    Place a stitch marker to indicate the beginning of the round and join in the round, being careful not to twist the stitches.

    Work in a k2, p2 ribbing pattern for 2 inches.

    Switch to the cable pattern:

    • Round 1: K2, * p2 K6 repeat from*to last 2 stitches p2
    • Round 2: K2, *p2 K6 repeat from*to last 2 stitches p2
    • Round 3: K2, p2 K6 repeat from*to last 2 stitches p2
    • Round 4: K2, P2 Cable 6 Back (C6B), p2. (To work C6B: See abbreviations above)
    • Repeat Rounds 1-4 until work measures aproxiamtley18 cm (7 inches) for cast on edge ending with row 4

    Decrease rounds:

    • Round 3: K2, p2 K6 repeat from*to last 2 stitches p2
    • Round 4: K2, P2 *Cable 6 Back (C6B), p2. Cable 6 front (C6F) p2, repeat from* to end of round
